Chris's 2nd Rotation Psychiatry

Chris rotated with Dr. Vines, M.D. in Apache Junction. He thought he was going to hate this one, because he can't stand psych stuff, but he ended up really enjoying it! Dr. Vines is the medical director Superstition Mountain Mental health. He works at the Apache Junction office for part of the day and then each day he rotates going to different places, so Mondays he goes to the Pinal County jail in Florence, Tuesdays at the office all day in Apache Junction, Wednesdays at the Mental Hospital and telemed with patients in Oracle (yes they use web cam to treat patients in Oracle, AZ), Thursdays at the Boys Ranch in Queen Creek, and Fridays the Mental hospital again. Dr. Vines was a really nice doctor and did well at teaching and including Chris in everything. They have a lot of drug reps come in and bring lunch practically everyday for the office staff. The first day they went to the jail and Dr. Vines saw the 1st patient and then another medical student saw the 2nd and Chris was expected to do the third, so expect to be thrown right in. They usually have 2 med students at each psych rotation. Chris really liked how Dr. Vines had fun with the patients. One of the patients had schizophrenia that had 5 personalities and talked to herself in 5 different voices. Another time he talked with a man who murdered his own mother which is really sad. Chris enjoyed going to the boys ranch where they did medication checks and talked with the youth. Chris knows psych isn't what he wants to do, but enjoyed his rotation. He worked from 8am till usually 7 or 8 at night. Only a few times he was home at 5 or 6.
