Kasen's Burn

On Monday night we were ahead of the routine night schedule, had just finished Family Home Evening and decided to have popcorn for our snack before heading off to bed. We had some black popcorn left from Kirksville and decided to pop that in our Stir Crazy. Kasen's favorite treat is popcorn and we have used hundreds of times and never had a problem. I ran upstairs to do something, Chris watched it and turned it over when it was done. Unfortunately the black popcorn did not absorb the oil, Kasen was right by Chris like he always does, had his hands on the counter and when Chris flipped it over, the oil dripped out as well scalding Kasen's left hand, poor thing. Chris immediately stuck it in cold ice water. It was killing him. Some of the skin was falling off as you can see in the pictures and there were blisters. We called our neighbor to give Kasen a priestood blessing and decided to take him to the ER especially because it was over the joints of the hand. At the ER our wonderful Dr. Vance who has come to our rescue to many times was working and helped Kasen's hand he cut the skin that was coming off and put the Siverdine cream on and bandaged it up as well as gave him some good pain meds and told us to go to the burn unit the next day. They said he has severe 2nd degree burns. Kasen was amazing and was so good through the whole thing! He has handled it like a champ through the entire process! You are one tough kid Kasen! He woke up every morning ready to go to the hospital to fix his hand so he could fight like Rocky again, knowing it was going to hurt. My heart goes out to the burn vicitms and what they go through.
The Maricopa County Burn unit is about 40 minutes from our home they were super nice to us and adored Kasen. They had us come back every morning for 3 days. The first two days they scraped and debreed his wounds, which hurt like crazy, but Kasen was so brave and didn't fight them just cried and said that it was hurting. They decided the 2nd day to try this new stuff Aquacell-AG which is amazing stuff! You don't have to soak and scrape the wound everyday twice a day like you would with the silverdine ceam. This stuff absorbs all the stuff our bodies make to heal our wounds (that we were scraping off) and heals the entire wound when it is healed the Aquacell-AG will peel off. It looks like a gray peice of felt. We only have to change the dressing that covers it and can't get it wet at all. Then we came back again for them to make sure the Aquacell-AG had adhered like it was supposed to and it is. Now we go back next week for a follow up and make sure everything is healing properly.
They gave Kasen Lortab for the pain and wow does it make him an angry kid! I know not Kasen he is always so happy, but watch out when he is on Lortab, he said that no one was allowed to laugh and kicked things and was just mad, but as soon as it wore off he was his happy nice self!
We feel very blessed that Kasen is doing so well and thank you for all of your prayers and ssupport, we have a wonderful family and thank you for all you do for us!
